Your Bun, Her Belly

A bit back I found out that Sarah Jessica Parker and her husband, Matthew Broderick, were using a surrogate to have more kids. It took them a long time to get pregnant with their son, and while they were trying for their first, she froze some of her eggs just in case.

They tried for a few years to have another, and finally decided to get her frozen eggs and have a surrogate carry their child.

A lot of people came out against them, saying that it was irresponsible, and coming out with awful things about the surrogate.

Surrogacy is when someone else carries your baby. It is an IVF procedure that is used so you can still have a biological baby, but if you have trouble conceiving and carrying a child, this would be the best option.

A woman agrees to become pregnant and deliver for a contracted party.

There are two types of surrogacy. Traditional Surrogacy (Straight Method) and Gestational Surrogacy (Host Method).

Traditional Surrogacy:
-Surrogate gets pregnant with her own child, but will be given to the biological father and his spouse, either male or female.
-Conceived by —
=IUI (intrauterine insemination)
=ICU (intracervical insemination)

Gestatinoal Surrogacy:
-Becomes pregnant via embroa transfer and is not the biological mother
-Conceived by —
=IVF (invitro fertilization)

Most surrogacies are made through agencies to match parents with a surrogate for a fee. This is like the movie Baby Mama. Definitely not a good movie if you are having trouble conceiving yourself, but kind of funny in a way.

When I was researching, I found quite a few couples that have used surrogacy. Robert DeNiro and his ex in 1995, Dennis Quaid and Kimberly Buffington in 2007, and now Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick in 2009. These were the most famous names, but there are tons more.

I think this is a great option for people that want their own child, but can’t get pregnant themselves. Adoption is great, but this is your child. If you can afford it, why not?

  1. I'm glad you posted this, I had been wondering why SJP decided to go this route. Glad to hear there is actually a reason and that she just wasn't trying to avoid stretch marks.

  2. Fascinating topic. It would be hard as the mother to have someone else experience the joys of pregnancy. I think it's great that people are willing to do it though.
